ABOUT AWAD

about AWAD is a leading grassroots African women's charity in Europe. Though small, AWAD works in partnership with mainstream bodies to reach and work with African community groups, especially grassroots women's groups. AWAD organisation emerged from Arts in development conference 1994 titled AWAD 2000, a collaborative conference between The British Council of England, The Calabash and Mama ‘Toro, an African woman lead artist. AWAD has since spearheaded the campaign for the role of arts in development issue by promoting African / Southern perspective in global awareness education, health, social and economic issue.

AWAD is the first grassroots African arts; women led charity that hosts Parliamentarian International Development Select Committee in its own home ground-African Women’s Centre in Manchester. AWAD is the first grassroots African arts women led organisation in Europe sharing its knowledge and experiences with mainstream bodies. AWAD spearheaded the campaign for inclusion of U.K. based grassroots African women in planning and implementation of 21st Africa development and Olympiad 2012.

The Directors of AWAD are all representatives of grassroots African groups in the U.K. and Africa. AWAD has an advisory committee that provide advice and direction to the Directors. The advisory committee are derived from different constituencies of African and the indigenous urban, rural and farming communities. This committee comprises of people from varied cultural, professional and academic backgrounds who have a keen interest in communities and understand the role of arts and cultural heritage in development issues including interdependence, community cohesion, health, environment , education and training.
