AWAD was formed to network, coordinate and facilitate the development of grassroots African women’s community groups that use arts and cultural heritage for education purposes. It values self-help and for network members to be self-sustaining. It envisions a just world where grassroots African women artists ensure their arts and cultural heritage are at the fore-front of global education and sustainable development. It aims to advocate the greater use of arts and cultural actions for sustainable development, especially the reduction of poverty and the promotion of education, health, rural and environmental issues, community cohesion, peace and justice
AWAD’s vision is of an environment of peace, reconciliation, creative spirit and compassion: a just world where grassroots African women artists can access real opportunities for their social-economic progress and ensure their arts and cultural heritage are at the fore-front of global education and sustainable development.
AWAD aims to reduce poverty and promote awareness of globalisation across communities by using mother’s creative arts and craft for building partnerships with local, regional, national and internationally based public, private and mainstream voluntary organisations.
AWAD is committed to restoring African peoples' dignity, sense of identity, continuity and security by enabling them to identify with and respect their own language, cultural heritage and traditional arts and crafts. AWAD’s mission is to promote change in the general perception of African women’s arts and cultural heritage thereby challenging obstructive practices, unfair competition, gender oppression and inequality towards social-economic progress of African women artists locally, nationally and internationally.
AWAD aims to challenge and extend the practices of government departments including Culture, Heritage, Health, Environment, Education, the Arts and International Development.
AWAD aims to influence and enhance sustainable development agendas and implementation of Government departments through partnerships between grassroots African women, arts and cultural heritage organisations, community groups and individuals sharing their knowledge and understanding of global interdependence
AWAD believes in the preservation and development of cultural arts and heritage, respect for diversity and in the co-operation and loyalty of its members.
AWAD believes that its members should value their cultural identity, having self-recognition and an appreciation of their mother land creative occupation –art, craft and language.
AWAD believes in partnerships and the co-operation of mainstream bodies in the public, private and voluntary sectors for mutual benefit and rejects conflicting strategies that exploit AWAD or divide its members and employees.
